The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), has always been a "movement for wholeness in a fragmented world." Born in the 1800s, it continues to be influenced by its founding ideals of unity in Christ with openness and diversity in practice and belief. The church is identified with the Protestant “mainstream” and is widely involved in programs of education, agricultural assistance, racial reconciliation, care of the disabled, and aid to victims of war and calamity.

We’re a church in transition! Wichita’s oldest Disciples congregation is still moving forward. But, we’re not on Broadway anymore. These days, you can find us on Rock Road, south of Harry in Rockford Square.

Broadway Christian Church started in 1885 as a Sunday bible study in the home of Mr. & Mrs. J.S. Whitaker, who had a vision of a church for Wichita’s growing south side. Since that time, we’ve gone through 47 ministers, two names, and five buildings—we’re working on our sixth!

You may know us from our old location at Lincoln & Broadway. It’s a beautiful building where, for years, we hosted weddings, operated a food bank, and did community outreach. But churches age, and in 2007, we realized we weren’t the same church anymore. It was time to renew ourselves and our mission. We sold the old building to Christian Faith Center and headed east, to set up shop in the Cadillac of temporary spaces, a former nightclub.

Now we’re in the process remodeling the old Schweiter Elementary School building to be our new home. When that’s complete, we hope to once again reach out to the community and resume our place as Wichita’s oldest, vital Disciples church.

Office hours are Mon–Thur. 9:00–2:00. Our transitional minister, Joan McGregor, is in on Monday’s from 10:00–1:00. The rest of the week, she is available by phone and on call for emergencies at 316-734-5452. For most inquiries, please speak to our secretary, Phillip.

Broadway no longer operates a food bank—but read on. We’re a church in transition, between permanent buildings, and we don’t have the space right now. When we settle into our new building, we hope to find a new mission for outreach. In the meantime, if you’re a nonprofit organization, please remove us from your list. If you’re looking for assistance, the United Way can help connect you to other food programs. The number for their Helpline is 2-1-1. We also like to send people to New Covenant United Methodist; their food pantry is open every weekday. Good luck, and God bless.
